Recently most of the basic cable chanells have been having a drought of quality programing. So what do the do, they go to the comidies of the 80's to fill their air time. In the past two weeks I have watched all the Meatballs flix, Caddyshack, and some other Rodney dangerfield flims, and "Girls just want to have fun" with a pre- everything Sarah Jessice parker, helen Hunt and even (gasp) Shannon Doherty. Maybe there was something about those films that stood the test of time. Who am I kidding, they are just funnier than the garbage on the screen today.

This is the first I've heard about it. I remember coming home from basic training in 82, going back to school and being assulted by the Valley Girl craze (and I actually lived in a valley town at the time) The one thing it took me a while to get used to was the colored hair styles, and all the guys wearing buzz cuts ala "Officer and a Gentleman". I miss those days :(

Back in the early 90's Debbie Gibson was attempting a comeback. She had started calling herself Deborah and began playing smaller venues. Any how, I was back in college, and working as night security supervisor at a local hotel in the Berkshires, and her party was staying overnight. After the performance, the group arrived, her mother walked around like she owned the place, her father stood around with this stupid grin on his face acting important, and the rest of the group just wanted to get to thier rooms. In the middle of all of this was this cute, and very tired looking Debbie Gibson, totaly unaware of what was going on around her. my attention was drawn away from the front doors for a moment( fans trying to come in) and for a brief moment debbie looked at me with a smile on her face. The impression I got from that brief encounter screamed one thing, "I'm tired and I want to get some sleep". I actually felt sorry for her, but we got the group to thier rooms, and they left bright and early the next morning.

I wanted to mention this particular site for some time, but got sidetracked. A radio station in kingston N.Y. WBMP has a localy produced program, The Music Blimp, hosted live by Randy "The Ran-Man" Turner. The Blimp is two hours dedicated to New Wave, Techno,Euro-Pop and Alt. music from the 80's. I listen to it live, but it is also streaming broadcast from the stations website, WBPM.com . The show is preceeded by the syndicated show "Backtrax USA: 80's edition with Kid Kelly", so you can get 4 hours of great 80's tunes. The shows begin at 6:00 p.m. est. saturday nights. Email requests can be sent in during the show. Last week i got a shout out when I mentioned that I saw the German group Alphaville, in Germany back in 1982. So check it out.

Did anyone the proliferation of these movies in the 80's? Starting with the Road Warrior and then going to Red Dawn, the idea of a post apocolyptic future seemed imminent. In between there were a lot of low budget foreign films,a lot from Italy. Does anyone else remember any other films that came out during that time?

Weird Science was the big hit of 1985, but there were two thoer science related films that came out that summer, "My Science Project", starring John Stockwell and Dennis Hopper( That one tanked and went straight to video) and "Real Genius" starring Val Kilmer, which was the first of the three to be released. Real Genius was my personel favorite, but Weird Science got the big press because of the sexual content, and Kelli LeBrock co-starred in it.

I know I posted a story about my running into Debbie Gibson a while back, but now I can't find it. Was there a problem in posting, or did the content get zapped somehow?

In 1984 Richard Greico dropped out of Hudson valley Community College, in Troy N.Y. after 1 year. I actually met him when I attended classes at HVCC. I had just gotten out of the Army and was starting my freshman year when he dropped out. His story , with picture, made the front page of the Alumni newsletter in the fall of 1990.
